Stages of sight translation: Evidence from eye movements

چکیده
Abstract The aim of the study was to investigate coordination source text comprehension and translation in a sight task. also sought determine whether strategies influence performance. Two groups conference interpreters—professionals trainees—sight translated English sentences into Polish while their eye movements performance were monitored. Translation demands manipulated by use either high- or low-frequency critical words sentences. experience had no effect on first-pass viewing durations, but experts used shorter re-view durations than trainees (especially condition). Professionals more accurately with less pausing trainees. high-frequency condition accurate pauses condition. Critical word accuracy increased onset latency (TOL) for individual sentences, pause relatively short when TOLs long. Together, these findings indicate that, translation, initial phase normal reading is followed phases which co-occur, that strategy are linked.

Perception in chess: Evidence from eye movements
We review and report findings from a research program by Reingold, Charness and their colleagues (Charness ef al 2001; Reingold et al. 2001a, 2001b) that employed eye-movement paradigms and provided strong support for the suggestion of de Groot (1946, 1965) and Chase and Simon (1973a, 1973b) that a perceptual advantage is a fundamental component of chess skill. We demonstrated dramatically larg...
متن کاملSemantic evaluation of syntactic structure: evidence from eye movements.
An eye movement study of temporarily ambiguous closure sentences confirmed that the early closure penalty in a sentence like While John hunted the frightened deer escaped is larger for a simple past verb (hunted) than for a past progressive verb (was hunting). The results can be explained by the observation that simple past tense verbs convey an external viewpoint on an event, which presumably ...
متن کاملFocus identification during sentence comprehension: evidence from eye movements.
Three eye movement experiments investigated focus identification during sentence comprehension. Participants read dative or double-object sentences (i.e., either the direct or indirect object occurred first), and a replacive continuation supplied a contrast that was congruous with either the direct or the indirect object. Experiments 1 and 2 manipulated focus by locating only adjacent to either...
متن کاملProcessing doubly quantified sentences: evidence from eye movements.
We investigated the processing of doubly quantified sentences, such as KeUy showed a photo to every critic, that are ambiguous as to whether the indefinite (a photo) specifies single or multiple referents. Ambiguity resolution requires the computation of relative quantifier scope: Whether a or every takes wide scope, thereby determining how many entities or events are to be represented. In an e...
متن کاملTracking object location: Evidence from eye movements during event comprehension
If depicted objects visually remain where they are, but are linguistically described as moving to new locations (‘onto the table’), subsequent reference to them directs attention to their new locations. But, do these attentional shifts depend on updated spatial screen coordinates, or new object associations? We investigated situations wherein depicted containers moved between spatial locations ...
